i Shan (1944 Heilongjiang) is a leader of the political pop movement of artists that emerged after 1990. His colorful, Warhol-like portraits of Mao wearing lipstick and carrying a lotus flower have long been popular with collectors. Li images are colorful, bright, ironic and often use the airbrush technique. His rouge series of Mao works suggests an androgynous Mao. Sexual imagery is often used in his large portraits. He also likes using butterflies, flowers, fish and insects in his works. A new series of works is filled with butterflies and even computerized images of insects which are fused to look as though they are partly made from human flesh. For a time he lived in New York. He now works in Shanghai. |
