Song Dong
ong Dong, (Beijing 1966) is a philosophical, conceptual artist who is often overlooked in the world of Chinese contemporary art. His works are meditations on life, efforts to consider the existential, to contemplate the past and present, and to examine the contradictions when eastern and western thoughts are merged. He graduated from fine Arts department of Capital Normal Unversity in 1989. And since then, he has created photographs, videos, installations and site specific works. For instance, his "Breathing" photographs show him lying on the ground in Tiananmen Square, breathing onto a cold surface to create a layer of ice. He has been writing a diary using water on stone for years, reflecting on his father's instructions to practice his calligraphy using water on a stone as not to waste ink. And he examines Taoist philosophy. His photographs are well-known. Some appeared in major photo exhibitions and in books curated by Wu Hung of the University of Chicago and Christopher Phillips, of the International Center of Photography.
