The artists of contemporary China are in the midst of a renaissance, and the international art world has taken notice. At no other point in modern history has the work of Chinese artists been so important to the cultural character of the world’s largest nation.
AW Asia is a private organization founded to promote the field of Chinese contemporary art. AW Asia’s initiatives include institutional loans and acquisitions, curatorial projects, publications, and educational programs.
The audience for Chinese contemporary art has grown significantly in recent years, and major institutions all over the globe are now including Chinese contemporary art in their exhibition planning. The AW Asia curatorial program is organizing museum-quality exhibitions that focus largely on Chinese painting and photography from the late 80s to the present. Artworks from post ’89 China are the foundation for the current market focus, and represent a truly significant period in the contemporary Chinese art timeline. AW Asia is also working with established curators to present conceptual exhibitions that draw from the diversity of work by Chinese artists. These exhibitions will concentrate on particular movements, offering a stronger social and historical context for this art.
AW Asia is a currently publishing a scope of literature related to Chinese contemporary art, including original books, monographs and exhibition catalogues. AW Asia is also the publisher of the U-TURN periodical, a new publication that chronicles and examines thirty years of artistic practice in China.
AW Asia will host various Chinese contemporary art-related events throughout the year, including lectures, seminars and private professional gatherings. These educational opportunities will allow for more in-depth investigation of Chinese contemporary art and culture, and will encourage wider dialogue among our colleagues.
