rom April 18 to May 10, Cheng Xiangjun, an artist who is known for lacquer paintings, held his solo exhibition at TwoCities Gallery. The theme of this exhibition was based on his “Tibet Impression” series. The 40 paintings have nothing to do with politics or society, but were purely be a reflection of the 60-year-old artist’s deep love and dedication for Tibet. This is seen through his thick and rough brush strokes and abstract expressionism in his unique paintings.
Cheng’s works go against the conventional form of lacquer paintings. By using abstract lines, geometric shapes and simple colors, he manages to expose the lacquer on a surface level, resulting in many different thick textures and stripes. He loves to use the Tibetan texts and symbols in his paintings, as this would emphasize and brings out the culture of Tibet. Cheng has been to Tibet many times, and his paintings clearly show his strong sentiments and feelings about Tibet.
Cheng was born in Shenyang. After graduating from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1986, he entered the teaching field. He is currently an associate professor at Qinghua University. His works are collected by the Chinese Museum of Art, Guangdong Museum of Art and so on.
