rtist Zhu Wei’s new studio is located in the center of Chaoyang District, Beijing. It being 300 square meters in area and 5.6 meters in height, as well as a simple loft-styled studio, if not with a preconceived impression, no one would’ve thought it to belong to a well-known ink artist.
Perhaps, Zhu Wei's experiences may explain it all: In 1982, 16 year old Zhu Wei, contrary to his parents’ wishes for him to go into medicine, joined the People's Liberation Army. Three years later, he was recruited and enrolled in Beijing’s People's Liberation Army Institute of Arts in Haidian District. After graduating in 1989, he made another self-decision to enter Beijing’s film academy. The experience he received in those three years had a deep impact on him. He had access to a large number of Western movies and rock and roll music, and quotes, “Previously, the upper floors of the college studio are dancing studios and vocal practice rooms… Painting is the most silent thing and I always believed that art isn’t the strongest thing. You see, below a rock music platform, so many people would raise their arms and acclaim you.”
However, Zhu Wei admits that painting is his best and strongest trait. Hence, he combines his talents and interests, such as the pop culture, rock music, drama, film etc., into his ink paintings. These are elements which inspire artists of all sorts.
Perhaps, it is only in this modern studio that we can comprehend his works.
