rom a top student in the middle school, which was affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts, to applying for the Central Academy of Fine Arts, three times before succeeding, sculptor Xiang Jing has long been regarded unique and special since young. Coming from an intellectual background, she has had many multi-cultural exposures and experiences. In 1997, the year of her graduation, together with several other girls, Xiang Jing held a small exhibition, of which displayed seven or eight small-scaled sculptures by her. Artist Liu Xiaodong had brought his circle of artist friends to her exhibition, all of whom had come with encouraging and positive attitudes. However, hard work and pain were involved in producing the sculptures. Those were the years in which she explored the direction of her works.
1999 was the turning point of Xiang Jing’s career. In that year, she participated in Shenzhen’s sculpture exhibition, where she increased the scale of her sculptures to a size similar to that of an average man, and painted it. Eventually, she found the results and outcome which she was looking for: “The change in scale immediately altered the experience of viewing the work. The process of enlarging the scale channeled the work into my views on real-life”, she once said.
It was also in 1997 that Xiang Jing moved from Beijing and settled in Shanghai, embarking on the 10 year course towards creating a new life. This move led her down in full swing; down a new creative path. In 2003, the large scaled sculptures, “Your Body”, left people with a deep impression. During that period of time, she served as a sculpture teacher in the Shanghai Normal University.
As of now, Xiang Jing wishes to return back to her homeland – Beijing. Since living in Shanghai for the past 10 years, Xiang Jing has established the direction of her works, and created her famous work series, such as “To Us”, “The Center of Quietude”, “Rainbow”, “The Open” etc. Hence, the studio located in Shanghai Minhang District, Wanyuan Road, would soon be vacant. The work space not only contains the memories of her working and personal life, but also documents her progress and success as a sculpture.
