Richard Vine, the writer and editor of Art in America , has published a new book on Chinese contemporary art called "New China Art." Max Protetch Gallery in New York is hosting a book signing for the author on Nov. 20.
A Damien Hirst painting featuring four skulls did not sell at a Philips de Pury auction in New York, a surprise for the incredibly hot artist and a sign that big collectors may be holding back.
Richemont , the luxury goods group, has opened a stunning new arts, culture and shopping center in Shanghai, at 796 Huaihai Road in an old mansion complex. The complex includes a glassed-in gallery by ShanghArt -- one of Shanghai's most prestigious galleries. The space -- something like Three on the Bund and Beijing's Legation Quarter -- is a mix of luxury shopping, high end dining and art. Alfred Dunhill luxury goods is one of the main tenants.
The South China Morning Post on Nov. 16 has an article about a new Hong Kong gallery, Contemporary, and its owner Angela Li, who's bringing artists like Wang Yiqiong to Hong Kong. Her gallery is at www.cbal.com.hk . Also, Ai Jing , the singer turned artist, has a new book out called "All About Love," featuring her works dedicated to the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. The images were shown at Today's Art Museum .

Chinese galleries in Beijing and Shanghai are having difficulty selling works and many are considering laying off staff or reducing their size and programs. While the best known artists in China are still commanding high prices, there are signs of weakness in the auction and gallery market, according to insiders.
China is planning to build one of the world's largest contemporary art museums, a 70,000 square meter space in Beijing. The announcement came in late October from the Ministry of Culture. The museum will stage exhibitions of artists from China and abroad. The space will be designed by Zhu Pei , 46, a rising architectural star who created the Digital Beijing space for the Olympics.
Yoko Ono , the widow of Beatles musician John Lennon , will hold her first art exhibition in China from November 22 to December 22 at the Shanghai Ke Center for Contemporary Arts . The Japanese born Ono, now 75 years old, will open the show with a performance art work. Her show is a retrospective of her art works over a 50 year period.
The FIAC Contemporary Art Show has opened in Paris with a display of ink wash paintings created by the Shanghai born artist Yan Pei Ming . Two of them depict US presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain . The images were published in the South China Morning Post on Friday, Oct. 24.
China's National Art Museum is planning to build an 80,000 square meter building opposite the Olympic stadium, the so-called Bird's Nest , according to "The Art Newspaper." The building will go up over the next three years and house the museum's collection of contemporary and modern art, according to museum director Fan Di'an , who says the museum will keep its 1958 building too.
Wang Guangyi has a solo exhibition in London to coincide with theFrieze Art Fair , which ends Oct. 19. The fair is showing works by Vitamin Art Place and the Long March Space. In the second week of Oct., a large group of top museums, curators, art critics and scholars from around the world met in Ditchley, a place near Oxford, England, for an conference hosted by the China Art Foundation, a London based foundation. The summit was a milestone in having leading museum directors meeting with Chinese artists and experts for the purpose of how to make Chinese art understood by the West and how Chinese museums could learn and cooperate with Western museums.
A performance artist and Chinese blogger named Hairong Tian Tian is once again taking off her clothes, this time in Beijing's 798 Arts District, and says she will be locked in a partially see through box for 10 days. Film director Oliver Stone is selling his collection of Chinese contemporary art for about $5.5 million at a Christie's auction in Hong Kong on November 30 and Dec. 1, including a large 1995 "Bloodlines" painting by Zhang Xiaogang , which he purchased many years ago, before Zhang became hot. He is also putting up for auction pieces by Liu Wei , the cynical realist painter, and also Tang Zhigang .
Zheng Bo was the only Chinese artist named to the APB Foundation 's prestigious Signature Art Award , recognizing a talented artist in the Asia Pacific region. The award was announced in October and won by a Singaporean sculptor.
The Financial Times on Oct. 11 has two stories about Chinese contemporaray art, one about collector Charles Saatchi 's upcoming show of Chinese art in London; and a profile of Dai Zhikang , the Shanghai billionaire real estate developer who has put a lot of money into art, creating the Zendai MOMA. The Zendai MoMa will be China's largest musuem and Dai is buiding a massive complex designed by Japanese artist Arata Isozaki . The museum is to open in 2010, in time for the Shanghai World Expo. The National Art Center in Tokyo is hosting an exhibition that covers 20 years of Chinese contemporary art with works by Ma Liuming , Wang Guangyi , Fang Lijun , Huang Yongping and others, thru Oct. 20. More information at: here .
Sotheby's Hong Kong auction of Chinese contemporary art had a suprisingly poor showing on Oct. 4, with several major works failing to sell and several hitting only the low end of the estimates. Although the auction sold $15 million, the Wall Street Journal called it disappointing. Time magazine and Businessweek also reported that between 40 percent and two thirds of works did not sell. Still, a Zhang Xiaogang Bloodlines painting topped the sale, going for $2.9 million. A Cai Guoqiang work sold for $2.2 million. And the sale of a Liu Ye painting was a world record price for the artist, $1.6 million.
Cai Guoqiang , the artist who worked on the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, will have a solo exhibition at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art later this month: "Cai Guoqiang: 7th Hiroshima Art Prize." It will open with an explosion fireworks event on Oct. 25.
A controversy has erupted over an installation created by the Shanghai-based video artist Qiu Anxiong . His installation, "We Are the World," which is exhibiting by Pearl Lam 's Contrasts Gallery , has angered a French artist who commissioned Chinese workers to work on his installation, which has similar features. Apparently, Qiu's installation pokes fun at the French artist and the West for their use of China's cheap labor and low cost production system. Angered, the French artist (whose identity is still a secret) and other important figures in the European art world are threatening to punish Qiu and ban him from showing at important venues in Europe. There is lots of Sotheby's news these days. Sotheby's is working with Adidas to hold an Oct. 5 auction in Hong Kong of works related to sports and the Olympics. The works by 70 artists, and even some athletes, have been exhibited at major musuems in China. They include pieces by Chen Wenbo, Feng Zhengjie and Tang Zhigang. Sotheby's auction house also said on Sept. 18 that they had won a copyright infringement case against Sichuan based Su Fu Bu Auction House, which Sotheby's argued copied its ads and has a similar sounding name in Chinese. Su Fu Bu had even promoted an auction of works that it said were launched into space by Chinese astronauts.
Sotheby's Sept. 17 auction of Chinese and Asian contemporary art took in about $8 million in New York. A Zeng Fanzhi painting sold for about $1 million, near the high estimate. Also, works byWang Guangyi and Feng Zhengjie also brought in strong sales. But the auction seemed modest in overall sales and high prices compared with auctions over the past few years, hinting that a slowdown may be ahead for Chinese art. But still, some pieces sold very strongly.

Artfacts.net, which has detailed information on auction results of Chinese artists, apparently conducted the interview during the SH Contemporary last week. Chen explains how he got his start in the art world, and the current state of the Chinese art market.
Agence France Press is reporting that sales were weak at the huge SH Contemporary Art Fair last week, according to gallery owners. Many visitors were impressed with the fair, but many gallery owners complained of fewer visitors. Many analysts worry that art sales are sliding downward with a weaker global economy, though others say prices of Chinese art are still relatively strong.
Sotheby's is holding an auction in New York Wed., Sept. 17, the last time it will auction Chinese contemporary art in New York. Thereafter, it will be sold in Hong Kong. Up for sale are works by Zeng Fanzhi (estimated $1.2 million), Liu Xiaodong (estimate $550,000), Yan Peiming ($500,000) and Qiu Xiaofei ($70,000) among others. Dozens of small pieces are also up for sale, many selling for about $10,000 to $25,000. On Saturday, Sept. 13, in Shanghai about 160 works will go up for sale at the Shanghai 800 Art Auction . The works include Wang Guangyi's 1989 piece, "Post-Claissicalism -- the Back of Mona Lisa," which is estimated to sell for about $1.5 million. Also, works by Zeng Fanzhi , Zhou Chunya and Shi Chong are up for sale.

Art in Asia , a Korean publication about Asian contemporary art, has named its Beijing Art Power 100 list in its July/August issue, featuring the most powerful people in Beijing's art world. Some, like artist Huang Yongping, do not even live in Beijing. But the list does include many of the powers that be. Here are some of the non-artists named: Alexander Ochs, Brian Wallace, Fan Dian, Federica Beltrame, Han Ji Yun, Henri Benaim, Huang Liaoyuan, Huang Zhuan, Jeromes Sans, Karen Smith, Leng Lin, Lu Peng, Lu Jie, Pi Li, Natalie Colonnello, Meg Maggio, Guan Yi, Zhang Li, , Yang Bin, Urs Meile, Uli Sigg, Sun Ning, Chen Dongsheng and Dong Mengyang.
The Shanghai Biennale and SH Contemporary kick off this week in Shanghai with a series of activities and art shows. Many of China's leading artists and major collectors are in town. Mao is in New York City. A 10-foot high metal Mao jacket sculpture, created by the well-known Beijing sculptor Sui Jianguo , is being installed at 70th Street and Park Avenue in New York City. The installation coincides with the Asia Society show, "Art and China's Revolution," which runs through November. The Mao appearance is part of an agreement between the Asia Society and the New York Department of Parks and Recreation. It will be there until mid-November. Sui is one of China's leading sculptors and the hollow Mao jacket sculpture (no Mao head or arms just a hollow jacket) is one of his best-known pieces.
Zhang Huan , the Shanghai based artist, is preparing to create an opera that he will direct in 2009/2010 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of G.F. Handel c, and also celebrate the musical and artistic talents of China and the West. It is expected to be a key performance for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo .
A Belgian conceptual artist has tattooed a group of pigs and also a Swiss man. A collector has agreed to buy the tattooed man (keeping his tattooed skin after he is dead, for a price of $214,000. That living man with the tattoo will be on display at the SHContemporary Art Fair. The display will be one of the more provocative pieces at the art fair, which begins September 9. Chinese government censors had to approve every item, though, so don't expect anything too radical.
The art season kicked off Wednesday evening at Lounge 18 in Shanghai with celebrities, artists, collectors and even women dressed in panda costumes, trailing Zhao Bandi , the artist who is obsessed with the panda image. Zhou Tiehai , Ding Yi , Uli Sigg , the collector, and the SH Contemporary art fair team were on hand. Uli Sigg presented some of the artists and a critic who won the 2007 Chinese Contemporary Art Awards , which he founded. Ai Wei Wei , who received a liftetime achievement award, had a stairwell model of bicycles twisted together. Liu Wei had art works; Pauline J. Yao , winner of the best critic award, was also on hand.
The newLan Club has opened in Shanghai, in the Bund area, with a huge art work the owner purchased at auction on display in one of the dining rooms. The owner, Zhang Lan, has been collecting art pieces by Fang Lijun ,Liu Xiaodong and others. Her huge Liu Xiaodong piece, part of his Three Gorges series, was one of the most expensive art works ever sold in China. She bought the piece for about $2.7 million. Zhang Lan is also the owner of the South Beauty chain of restaurants and her Lan Club is Shanghai is marvellously designed by Patrick Gilles.
Pace Gallery is expecting to have its first New York show of works by Zhang Xiaogang this October. Pace has opened a massive Beijing space in the 798 arts district and now represents Chinese artists such as Zhang Huan and Zhang Xiaogang.
Several leading artists are working together with a designer to create toys based on their best-known art works. Wang Guangyi , Yue Minjun ,Zhou Chunya , andZhou Tiehai all considering signing a licensing deal that would produce expensive toy images of their art works, selling as a set that would cost about $10,000. One other artist also joins the group.

Zhang Xiaoming, who helpedSotheby's sell millions of dollars worth of Chinese contemporary art over the past few years, recently stepped down from the huge auction house to start her own consultancy, according to art insiders.
Also, Sotheby's said on Aug. 13 that it has decided to stop selling Chinese contemporary art in New York and London and will consolidate all of its Asian contemporary art in two sales every year in Hong Kong, where the auction house has had strong sales over the years. Sotheby's has sold hundreds of millions of dollars of Chinese contemporary art over the past five years, which the highest selling prices occurring in Hong Kong. Now, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and other Asian art will all be sold in Hong Kong. Other locations, such as New York, may simply have pre-sale shows.
The New York Times art critic Holland Carter , who has been writing on China's art scene recently, wrote in the July 30 paper about China's female artists, noting that few get solo shows in China. He looks at Ciu Xiuwen, Lin Tianmiao , Shen Xiuzhen, Xing Danwen, Xiao Lu (who fired the famous shot in 1989) and other artists. There is a multimedia slide show included in the major piece. "Colors and Olympism " an exhibition featuring Olympic related works by 700 artists from around the world is drawing big crowds at the National Art Museum in Beijing. Also, Pace Gallery is planning a big opening in Beijing 798 Arts District on Aug. 2, with a reception and public opening on Aug. 3. The show will feature works by Zhang Xiaogang and Zhang Huan . Meanwhile, Legation Quarter will have a special show during the Olympics, featuring some of China's top artists, and Bloomberg News reports that a show at the Xin Beijing Art Gallery was closed by censors because of images related to Tibet.

Uli Sigg , who is believed to have the largest collection of Chinese contemporary art in the world, is negotiating with the Chinese government about donating a large portion of his collection to build a museum in China, possibly in the city of Shenzhen, according to art insiders. A few years ago, the creators of the Estella Collection had tried to sell that collection to China to become part of a museum. They later decided to auction the works at Sotheby's.
The coastal city of Qingdao , where the Olympic sailing events are being held, is planning to turn a large group of old factories into a new arts district, modeled on Shanghai's M50 area and Beijing's 798 Arts district.
In the July/August issue of Art Asia Pacific , the collector Uli Sigg criticizes a proposal that would boycott Chinese contemporary art because of China's Tibet policies. Sigg essentially calls the boycott suggestion crude and ridiculous saying Chinese artists are hardly complicit with the government. Indeed, they often challenge the system.
Art works from the Kent and Vicki Logan Collection of Chinese contemporary art are now on exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art , including works by Ai Wei Wei andLiu Wei .
Pace Beijing , a division of Pace Gallery of New York, will open its inaugural exhibition on Aug. 2 in Beijing. The show, called, "Encounters," features works by Western and Chinese artists, including Zhang Huan and Zhang Xiaogang . The show is to be held in a spectacular exhibition and gallery space Pace has created in the 798 Arts District.
The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing will open a special exhibition on its future on July 19, called, "Our Future: The Guy & Myriam Ullens Foundation Collection. " The show, curated by Jerome Sans , Guo Xiaoyan and Kate Fowle , features works by over 60 Chinese artists, including: Chen Zhen , Gu Wenda , Liu Xiaodong ,Huang Yongping , Wang Guangyi and Zhang Xiaogang . Also performance and educational works. Curators say it will have a dynamic setting, and U.C.C.A. even commissioned works for the site, including works by Ai Wei Wei , Liu Wei , Wang Du, Wang Jianwei , Sui Jianguo and others. The show will run through October 12.
Martell Artists of the Year 2008 will be unveiled on July 11 at the Shanghai Museum of Art . They include, Liu Ye , Xia Xiaowan , Hong Lei andMario Sorrenti . Co- organizer of the show is the Central Academy of Fine Arts .
California sculptor Bruce Beasley 's work featuring a series of interlocking disks has been chosen as one of the main sculptures to be placed at the Beijing Olympic Garden, next to the so-called "Bird's Nest" National Stadium.
Saatchi Gallery is opening a new London musuem at the Duke of York headquarters building on Oct. 9 with a special show featuring the works of 30 Chinese contemporary artists. The former advertising executive owns works by Zhang Xiaogang ,Wang Guangyi , Xiang Jing and dozens of other Chinese artists.
An auction at Phillips de Pury in London on June 30 recorded some lacklaster sales as aZeng Fanzhi work featuring Mao sold for below estimate, though still for about $4 million and a Zhang Xiaogang work from his Memory and Amnesia series failed to sell, for about $2 million.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York has purchased 23 photographs by Chinese contemporary artists for its collection. The Museum bought the works of artists such as Ai Weiwei , Rong Rong and Huang Yan from Larry Warsh , an art dealer and collector who once published a series of popular gallery guides before selling them in 2002. Mr. Warsh and his father-in-law, the collector Howard Farber , have both collected Chinese contemporary art for year. Karen Smith , the art critic and curator, helped Mr. Warsh collect the photographs he sold to MOMA at a discount from retail prices, according to Bloomerg. Story here . The New Republic has published a scathing review of Chinese contemporary art. The article, entitled, "Mao Crazy," by Jed Perl , says Chinese contemporary art is unimaginative and overhyped, and worst of all it glorifies Mao and the Cultural Revolution, which many historians believe were destructive forces that killed millions of people. Perl says art critics, collectors and artists simply see Mao and the Cultural Revolution as chic subjects to portray or praise. The article also says much of the art from China is copies of western contemporary art and not of high quality. He names artists, curators and collectors. Click here for article.
A major exhibition featuring the works of Cai Guoqiang will be held at the National Art Museum in Beijing beginning during the Olympics, on Aug. 19 and running through September 2. The works shown will include some iconic art piece that were shown at the Guggenheim show in New York this year. The show has been designed by the Ministry of Culture as one of the key cultural spots during the Olympic games. The show is co-organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Guggenheim.
On June 22, the artistZhao Bandi opened his Bandi Panda shop in Beijing's 798 Arts District, featuring plush toy panda for sale. The artist, who is known for carrying around a toy panda and featuring it in his art work, is now going to sell a collection of panda toys he designed, featuring Olympic colors. Zhao has protested against the showing of the movie, Kung Fu Panda, saying it exploits a national symbol. He has used the same symbol in fashion shows featuring panda inspired clothing.
The University of California at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive are going to hold the largest ever exhibition of Chinese contemporary art beginning Sept 10. The works are from the huge collection of Uli Sigg , the Swiss collector. The show will feature about 141 works by 96 artists. More information here 。
Hosane , the auction house, is holding an auction at the Portman Ritz Carlton Hotel on June 26 and 27 featuring works by China's leading artists. A Zhang Xiaogang work is expected to sell for nearly $1 million; a Wang Guangyi for over $600,000 and a Yue Minjun for about $250,000.
A major exhibition of works by Wu Shanzhuan are now on show at the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou. The show was curated by Gao Shiming , Chang Tsong-zung and Guo Xiaoyan, and runs from June 21 through July 27. More information here .
Phillips de Pury & Co. , the auction house, is holding an auction on June 29 and 30 in London to sell a large work by ]Zeng Fanzhi called "Chairman Mao II 1993". The piece is expected to sell for $4 million to $6 million -- one of the highest prices in the history of Chinese contemporary art.
The Drents Museum andthe Groninger Museum are holding Go China! Assen-Groningen in Groningen from 26 April to 23 November. The Groninger Museum will display a chimera of past and present-day China with several exhibitions: Ancient Bronzes Masterpieces from the Shanghai Museum, Ai Weiwei solo exhibition "Writing on the wall", "Chinese New Realism and Avant-Garde in the Eighties and Nineties," and "New World Order:Contemporary installation art and photography from China" exhibition.
Zhao Bandi , the artist known for carrying around a panda and filling his art works with pandas, has called for a boycott of the American animation film Kung Fu Panda , which will be released at theatres in China on June 20. He says Hollywood is trying to capitalize on a Chinese symbol. Curiously, some Chinese have tried to prevent Zhao Bandi from using pandas in his own art works, saying he is exploiting a national symbol.
UBS , the Swiss bank, is showing works from its huge art collection for the first time in China. "Memories of Tomorrow" is appearing at theShanghai Art Museum through July 20, and features works by artists from around the world, including Lucian Freud, Susan Hiller , Chieh jen-Chen of Taiwan and Cao Fei , the young Chinese artist. The exhibition is from 6th June to 17th, July. Please see here for more information.
Sarasin & Company , the private Swiss bank, has signed a deal with the Shanghai Art Museum to become the main sponsor of the Shanghai Biennale from 2008 to 2016. Also, Wu Guanzhong , one of China's leading traditional artists, has donated 66 works to the Shanghai Art Museum in May. Earlier he had donated 6 works in 2005.
The Asia Society , which is opening a branch in Hong Kong, is planning a major exhibition in New York featuring art works from the revolutionary period -- the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The show has been in the planning stages for five years and is expected to be a landmark exhibition showing oil paintings and other art works rarely seen before.

Despite the records, Sotheby 's Zhang Xiaoming, who helps gather works for auction, suggested in an interview with the International Herald Tribune that Chinese art is becoming stale, with artists repeating themselves, and also hinted that the market may begin to weaken. See article here .
Larry Warsh , the head of AW Asia and a major collector of Chinese contemporary art, is planning to publish a series of books about the history of Chinese contemporary art, entitled “U Turn.” The series will be edited by Philip Tinari . Hong Kong has an exciting new art space in Times Square, which now features an installation by Yue Minjun called Contemporary Terracotta Warriors , and pieces by Hung Tunglu of Taiwan and Huang Zhihyang, both of whom live in Beijing.
The government of Singapore , hoping to make a major push into contemporary art, is hosting a major art fair that opens on the same day as the SH Contemporary this September. And Singapore is actually paying galleries to show up, and offering free booths. Many galleries have already signed up.

Ai Weiwei, the outspoken artist and contributing designer of the Olympic stadium, "The Bird's Nest," has criticized China's adoration of the Olympics, the Chinese media for called the torch relay "holy," and the government for encouraging blind nationalism, placing him on the other side of some artists who have joined in to protest the French over disruptions of the torch relay.
Yue Minjun has decided to pull out of an art exhibition in France later in June, the latest high profile artists to do so because of growing anger in China because the Olympic torch relay in Paris was disrupted by protesters. Wang Guangyi and Lu Hao also pulled out of a show. And other artists in China are following suit.

A nude photograph of French President Nicholas Sarkozy's wife, Carla Bruni, the famous model, was purchased at Christie's auction in New York by a Chinese art collector. Christie's did not release the name of the art collector. He paid $91,000 for the photograph. But Bloomberg News reported that it is Alex Cao, a former fashion photographer and founder of China Square Gallery in New York.
